It was the kind of story that every local television news station dreams about: A feel-good story of a minority who chooses the high road in the face of unfathomable oppression.
When Dayna Morales sent a receipt bearing an anti-gay message to a pro-gay Facebook page, she was likely looking to win over the empathy of a few dozen, maybe a few hundred, followers.
Instead, the receipt, bearing a hash mark where a tip should be and a message in opposition to Morales’ lifestyle, went viral. Someone, somewhere, republished it. Soon after, every local television station in New York City wanted an interview with Morales, who was all too happy to oblige.
It was the perfect story, told at the perfect time — November sweeps, when American TV stations air their most titillating news stories with the hopes of driving up ratings. Millions around the world heard Morales’ story, and thousands patroned the restaurant where Morales worked, some even going so far as to make donations.
Yes, it was the perfect story — for Morales, for the restaurant, for the media — until it wasn’t.
On Monday, WNBC found the couple who ate at the restaurant the night of November 13th. They produced a different receipt, one that showed a 20 percent tip and no anti-gay message. And to quell any doubters who questioned the difference between their “customer copy” and Morales’ “merchant copy,” the couple produced a Visa credit card statement showing the tip had been charged to their account.
Confronted with the evidence, the restaurant could offer no explanation. Neither could Morales, who told the reporter that the handwriting on the receipt wasn’t hers — even though nobody had accused her of writing it.
Two days later, friends and former co-workers are speaking out.
Friends say Morales has a history of embellishing. Some of the things they accuse her of lying about: Living in a home damaged by Superstorm Sandy, shaving her head because she had been diagnosed with brain cancer and being severely injured during combat in Afghanistan, where she served as a U.S. Marine (a military spokesperson confirmed Morales enlisted, but never served in Afghanistan).
What’s more, a former girlfriend told LoHud.com that the handwriting on the receipt that went viral last week belongs to Morales.
Morales, who took advantage of every media opportunity two weeks ago, is now turning down reporters seeking requests for comment.
This whole story makes me sad.
As much as I love reading, I find it hard getting thru Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. For those that don’t know and living under a lovely rock, lol, this is the 2nd book in The Hunger Games trilogy.
I tried reading this book twice before and both times I get no more then half way when I lose interest in the book. Just something about it, the author keeps going and going and going. I swear Stephan King books are a walk in the park compare to this book. So 3rd times a charm right?
I know the movie came out this past Friday but I wanna finish this darn book before I go see it. I now feel that this book is a bit more interesting cause I feel that I’ve skipped thru some stuff the first 2 times. Let’s see how long it takes me to finish this.
Just when I thought my dog has stopped losing her marbles, she’s lost them again lol. Here’s her story, my sister found 2 chihuahuas that were abandoned at the end of august of 2012. That was the time my dog’s health was going south and lost him in September of 2012.
So when my 2 chihuahuas that were found abandoned, one of them had this thing where in the middle of the night she would howl. She sounded like someone was torturing her. She sounded really bad. Well, she did that for months. Weather I went to take a shower or next door to visit my sister, one of the 2 chihuahuas would howl. I thought it may have been separation anxiety. She finally stopped doing that probably around I wanna say February. Well, a couple weeks ago, if I sit and eat at the table, she starts to whine. When I ask her what’s wrong baby, she starts to howl. Again she sounds like she’s being tortured. Its flipping hilarious cause I do it with her. I’m sure I shouldn’t of started that with her but its funny cause I do it to see who’s louder. She wins lol. Today, she decides she’s gonna do it and when I told her no, she did it anyway. I love her to pieces but I think she needs to stop. Last thing I need is for one of my neighbors to call the cops. My chihuahuas are both girls and I think they be mom and daughter. Both are very sweet and I love them both very much. The smallest is named Sophia and my howler is Margaret. I was told that Sophia was about 6 months last November. She’s now a year and a half. I’m not sure how old Margaret is but the vet guessed she was about 3. I sometimes think that I love Margaret the most but I love them the same. I am very happy my sister was able to get them and bring them home to me. Margaret was my rock when my dog died. I consider her my best friend. It looks like she was abused just by the way she acts around certain things. Or if I raise my voice to call out to my mom, she still gets scared. She’s gotten so much better though. They are both great. I know not a lot of people like chihuahuas cause they are yappy but I don’t mind. I had a chihuahua before so I’ve gotten use to it.
The new 50 shades of grey dude looks like Ted Bundy. Happy Halloween.
So I finally signed up for Google+. I’m not sure how it works but I’m doing a little exploring. Anyone know how to use it or where I can find out how to use it? Thanks!!
